The Court Concert

Before he became cult director Douglas Sirk, Detlef Sierck cut his teeth on such lavish European star vehicles as Das Hofkonzert (The Court Concert). Marta Eggerth is cast as Christine, a young singer who aspires to find out who her father was. Her odyssey brings her to the court of a mythical kingdom, where she is romanced by handsome lieutenant Walter (Johannes Heesters). He is warned not to lose his heart to a "commoner," but all turns out all right when King Serenissimus (Otto Tressler) turns out to be Christine's long-lost daddy. Hofkonzert was designed as a comeback for Marta Eggerth, whose star had eclipsed by the mid-1930s.

Così fan tutte - Salzburger Festspiele 2020

As Christof Loy put it: Così fan tutte invites us to embrace the complexity of life and face the future with heads held high. In his staging of the version he abridged with Joana Mallwitz for the Salzburg Festival 2020 the focus is wholly on the figures and the subtle choreography of their emotional states — in a space that like a magnifying glass exposes the intricate mechanisms between the characters. In this way the production leads the protagonists and the audience to experience the ‘serene calm’ that can perhaps indeed cure our own ‘distempers’.

The Rise and Fall of Diesel Wilmington

Germany, 1969: Retreating to his change room after a rather fabulous gig, British guitar- and song-writing-god Diesel Wilmington encounters Helmuth: Diesel-fan by trade. The unlikely pair - despite the barrier of language - engages in a rather odd conversation about the proper reading and origin of Diesel’s ingenious lines. It begins to dawn on Helmuth that his imaginations may have been somewhat highly-strung, as a stranger walks in; exposing the original mastermind as an overambitious double. What does this make of the autograph Helmuth was so eager to get?

Quartet in Bed

West Berlin, summer 1968: the attitude to life at the time through the eyes of (at least) three different quartets: the anarchic bards of "Insterburg & Co." wander through the backyards of Kreuzberg, passing the time with silly poems, homemade instruments and their playmates. The lively Jacob Sisters and their four poodles make guest appearances as international show stars in the luxury hotels. And postcard Berlin is presented by four oil sheikhs who are on a state visit.

Abrahamsen: The Snow Queen

The Snow Queen is Hans Abrahamsen's first opera, composed to a self-penned libretto, based on Hans Christian Andersen's eponymous fairy tale. Following an in-depth study of the topic of snow and a life-long obsession with Andersen's fairy tales, Abrahamsen composed the opera between 2014 and 2018. Hans Abrahamsen's music, with it's smooth transitions and subtly modified repeats, lends the lyrics both depth and lightness. He is keen to point out the range of avenues for interpretation available. " It's possible to read the fairy tale in a variety of ways. It contains many mysteries which are open to numerous interpretations." Accompanying Barbara Hannigan is a top-class ensemble of singers, including Peter Rose, Katarinya Dalayman and Rachael Wilson. Cornelius Meister is the musical director, currently general music director at the Staatsoper Stuttgart.

Beethoven - Ein Kinderkonzert mit Werken von Ludwig van Beethoven

"Ta-ta-ta-taaa" - everyone knows these four notes and they are more than 200 years old. This world-famous motif was invented by Ludwig van Beethoven - the rebel without a wig who ignored the laws of music, the world parade champion (more than 20 times in Vienna), the slob who dried his wet shirts on the piano, and an indomitable man who, despite being deaf, created music that today symbolizes the brotherhood of nations. Instead of working through the artist's biography, the program rummages through Beethoven's moving boxes and brings to light events, peculiarities and musical facts about the jubilarian Ludwig van Beethoven in a humorous and knowledgeable way. Excerpts from Beethoven's symphonies show the picture of a composer between the classical and romantic periods, who mastered folkloristic, dance-like lightness as well as depictions of nature, grand symphonies and themes with catchy tunes.
