The film goes far beyond the concert stage and delves into the tension-filled space of rehearsals – where the sound is not yet fixed, but alive, fragile, and in the process of becoming. We experience a wealth of musical encounters in which a shared musical language begins to breathe. The focus is on works by influential composers such as Rebecca Saunders, Heiner Goebbels, and Mark Andre, alongside the vibrant voices of a younger generation, including Brigitta Muntendorf and Milica Djordjevic, in collaboration with conductors such as Vimbayi Kaziboni, Bas Wiegers, Ingo Metzmacher, and Enno Poppe. Each year, Ensemble Modern premieres around 70 works, continually venturing into uncharted sonic territories.

In 1997, the feminist punk poet and experimental writer Kathy Acker interviewed the Spice Girls for the Guardian (not, as has passed into legend, US Vogue). The Spice Girls were at the height of their fame, flicking peace signs at us from every teenage girl’s bedroom wall on posters ripped from magazines. Acker on the other hand was an unapologetic weirdo in the same vein as William S Burroughs, writing books so filled with sex, incest and violence that West Germany banned Blood and Guts in High School for being too pornographic. On July the 19th, 1978, the Dead Kennedys would play their first show at the Mabuhay Gardens in San Francisco, California. This venue, also known as The Fab Mab was somewhat of a legendary venue. It saw the likes of The Runaways, Ramones, The Dead Boys and even Motorhead stretch their strings there. So what better place for the Dead Kennedys to launch their assault onto the world. The Dead Kennedys would be formed through The Recycler. A now legendary newspaper that brought many influential groups together. Metallica, Guns N Roses and Motley Crue all started from classified ads here. Whilst of course the Kennedys were a full band, one man would essentially become the spokesperson for the group and his name would become synonymous with them. You can’t hear the name Jello Biafra without thinking of the politics behind Dead Kennedys.

Filmed during their Latin America tour in January 2026, ‘A Deeper Struggle’ traces Terror’s path from their early days through to the making of ‘Still Suffer’, without trying to romanticise it, what comes through instead is endurance, a band that’s stayed rooted in hardcore while others have peeled off or faded out. There’s no reinvention arc here, just a clear look at how they’ve kept going. Combining live footage with candid testimonials from the band members themselves, the film examines the motivation of the veteran collective as they reflect on how far they have come and what still remains. Alongside this band documentary, the band has released their 10th full length 'Still Suffer'.
