Silly Boy Blue en live dans la collection Emporte La Nuit

A live performance that begins in the middle of the night and ends in broad daylight... that was the challenge Sourdoreille set Silly Boy Blue for the first episode of our Emporte la nuit collection. On the banks of the Seine, a few meters from the Eiffel Tower, Ana and her musicians performed while Paris was still asleep. As the minutes passed, the first subways arrived at the same time as the first rays of sunlight. And very quickly, the city came to life, moving to the beat of Silly Boy Blue's songs.

Stock Aitken Waterman: Legends of Pop

Mike Stock, Matt Aitken and Pete Waterman were the producers who came, SAW and conquered the UK charts in the 1980s, spinning the music scene right round like a record with their instantly recognisable brand of disco floor-filling pop hits. The trio divided the nation between those who loved their Hi-NRG sound and the singers they transformed into tabloid sensations, and a music press that loathed them for turning record producing into a production line. Today, many of SAW’s most memorable hits are considered classics of their time, and the very best of them are celebrated in this new selection, featuring such artists as Rick Astley, Dead or Alive, Donna Summer, Bananarama, Mel & Kim and, of course, Kylie and Jason

Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 4 & Bruckner: Symphony No. 7 - Emanuel Ax, Wiener Philharmoniker, Bernard Haitink

After 65 years at the rostrum, Bernard Haitink is making his departure from the concert stage at the age of 90. In his farewell concert at the Salzburg Festival, featuring the Vienna Philharmonic and pianist Emanuel Ax, the maestro conducts two tragical-lyrical works that mark the zenith of the respective composers’ creative powers - Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 and Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7. The Dutch conductor was to enchant his audience, orchestra and apparently also himself in his final performance of the work.

Five years of work, a one-hour movie, two zines with more than a hundred coloured pages. Hand screen-printed cover, 350 numbered copies. These are the numbers of URAGANO NEGLI OCCHI, a true story (self)built in the sweaty and smoky corners of the illegal Milan of occupations and hardcore punk concerts. Dozens of voices, interviews, flyers, illustrations and photographs describe a heterogeneous community of individuals, squats and collectives that in recent years has experienced an explosion of vitality, moving with enthusiasm and determination in the contradictions of the metropolitan city of Milan, affirming an unprecedented approach to Do It Yourself practices. An entirely self-produced narrative and visual project, conceived, developed and finalized in our spare time, with a lot of unexpected events in between.

Pierrot Lunaire

Invited by the conductor Premil Petrovic to stage Arnold Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire, a musical theater work from 1912 based on the poems of Albert Giraud, LaBruce transposed a strange and tragic episode of true crime onto the composition. Complementing the original atonal score is a narrative about a trans man who is outed by his girlfriend’s father and forbidden from seeing the young woman again. Crestfallen, the protagonist decides to prove the fact of his manhood by castrating a taxi driver and then revealing his newly transplanted member to the two of them. This story, which for LaBruce “serves as a kind of allegory for all gender radicals and outcasts driven to extremes by the disapproval and hostility of the dominant order,” is rendered in a visual style that nods to the era of Schoenberg’s melodrama. LaBruce cheekily appropriates the formal vocabulary of silent cinema with black-and-white photography, irises, and intertitles like “A cock, a cock, my kingdom for a cock!”

Noon in Tunisia

The two-part film "Noon in Tunisia" by Peter Lilienthal is a meeting of jazz and Arabic music at various public or open-air venues in Tunisia. Under the direction of George Gruntz, European and US jazz musicians play his suite-like composition "Maghreb Cantata", which is based on original Bedouin dances, together with Arab performers. The highlight is the Fazani, a rhythm of Bedouin tribes from the desert region of the Libyan-Tunisian border. The recording took place from 5.5. - 24.5.1969 in and around Tunis.

Co-operette

Debroy Somers and his Band, comedian Hal Walters and the delightful dance troupe ‘The Six Co-Operettes’ all feature in this full-colour promotional film for the Co-Operative Wholesale Society. Watch with wonder as one sprightly young vegetable tears strips off the other in the bewildering but brilliant ‘carrot and onion dance’. Comedian Stanley Holloway was famous for his comic monologues but for reasons unknown, he never gets started here. The BFI’s copy of this extremely rare film cuts away just as it looks like he’s going begin his routine.
