Sage Francis: Life Is Easy

A feature documentary and concert film, LIFE IS EASY [1968 - 2005] (Released 2005, on Strange Famous Records) chronicles the life and performance art of the influential and innovative "godfather of indie-hop." (The Guardian) Rapper, activist, and poet, Sage Francis, moves through the unforgiving rawness of what life is like on the fringe of an entire culture and adapts to the changing musical structure devoid of former industry gods and movers and shakers, while making a name for himself and ushering in a new language and attitude in rap and hip-hop. In the backdrop: a crumbling music industry, and in the foreground: conscious, politically charged, and universally resonant lyrics and performances captured through various lenses as Sage takes it all head-on. Virtuoso: The Olga Samaroff Story

As America's first international woman concert pianist, renowned lecturer, author, music critic, famous conductor's wife and champion for equal rights for women in music, Olga Samaroff was at the center of a musical life that to this day embodies the imprint of her artistry and achievements. Her life story also portrays an era in our American cultural heritage that has largely been underserved in the documentary film genre. Texas-born Olga Samaroff a.k.a. Lucy Hickenlooper lived at a time when music was dominated by men and Old World prejudices----and she emerged as a leader among many. Against tremendous odds she rose from complete obscurity to be the most successful American woman concert pianist of the early 20th Century.

Keeping Score: Shostakovich Symphony No. 5

Shostakovich may have secreted a subversive cipher beneath the surface of his life-saving Symphony No. 5. This is all the more shocking since another bad review from Stalin’s totalitarian forces could have meant a sentence to the Gulag or worse.... When he penned this fifth symphony, the composer was literally writing for his life. The risk was so high that Shostakovich slept on the stairs outside his apartment so the secret police would not wake his family when they came from him, as he was sure they would. This Keeping Score episode, investigates the arresting symphony that would either redeem Shostakovich or doom him. Did he dare hide a kernel of musical criticism in what appears to be a paean to the Motherland? Join Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony as they explore the hidden language of this masterwork. Episode includes full-length concert performance of Dimitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 in D minor by the San Francisco Symphony.

Two-eyed Ireland

In 2006, the ethnic fusion band ‘2nd Moon’, who became famous with their song ‘In West Sky’ featured in the TV drama *Ireland*, visited the home country of their first album’s guest singer, Lynda Cullin, for the first time. What started out as a casual trip turned into a serious fascination with the culture and its music for two of the band members, Hyun-bo and Hye-ri. A year later, in August 2007, they formed a five-member Irish trend project band ‘Bard’ and went to the World Fleadh in Portlaoise, Ireland, each with only their instruments. Music in Ireland is deeply connected to daily life and reflects the country’s painful history.
